A hair transplant is a surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic , whereby hair is taken from a donor site normally the back or sides of the patients head (as this hair is not affected by male pattern baldness)It is then taken and placed in the areas of thinning on the front, top or crown. The replanted hair will continue to grow for life.
Transplant procedures normally fall into the categories below:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
The FUT or “strip” method has been the most popular treatment for many years and has a proven established track record generally producing greater densities than the more recent FUE method. The FUT (Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation) method involves a strip of skin with hair to be removed from the back of a patient’s scalp. Grafts of hair are then harvested and then carefully implanted into the desired areas.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE is the latest technology which involves the removal of hair grafts one at a time using highly specialised equipment, typically from the back and sides of the scalp. The grafts are implanted similarly to the FUT technique. The major advantage to FUE is that there is no linear scar making it virtually undetectable that a surgery has ever taken place.
